Smetana, Suk and Martinů – Masters of Czech Music
Czech classical music is irreplaceable in a global context, particularly with regard to the works of five composers, including Bedřich Smetana, Josef Suk and Bohuslav Martinů. Their chamber music compositions now hold a firm place on the most prestigious concert stages.
This time, the Philharmonic Music Salon will feature a composition by Josef Suk, which served as the national anthem during the First World War. You will also hear Smetana’s quartet “From My Life”, which truly presents a series of musical vignettes capturing the composer’s fate, and finally a composition by Bohuslav Martinů, which marked the beginning of his Parisian period and faithfully captured the spirit and pulse of the times, particularly in Paris in 1924.
Together, we shall explore the nature of the relationships that bound Smetana, Suk and Martinů. On the basis of their own statements and extracts from their correspondence, we shall discover whether they envied one another, how they got on, what they had in common, and whether or not they respected one another.
